EP Review: Skarra Mucci X Manudigital - Ragga Blasta

„Yo Manu, mi deya! Yaggayow…“

Bold, direct, and with a unique ragga flow: that’s how his fans know and love the one called Skarra Mucci. Two and a half years after his Perfect Timing album, he now comes in with a new release called Ragga Blasta, for which he teamed up with computer-reggae mastermind Manudigital. Their collaboration dates back to 2018 at the very least, when Skarra featured on Manu’s Bass Attack album with Rock This World, and the musical understanding seems to have grown over the years.

How else can you describe the perfect match between Manu’s fast-paced, hard-hitting riddims and Skarra’s minimalist, staccato delivery? Opener and title track Ragga Blasta is a fine example of this marriage, as the artist’s vocals ride the boom-bap inspired beat in style, singing his own praises. “Sharper than a razor blade!”

The tempo is kept high in the subsequent Angel, another hip hop influenced beat that features a sample of Devon Morgan aka Likkle Devon as well as amazing horns, and  Freedom Fighter. The distinctive flute theme in the beginning, repeated throughout the song, is what makes this one special, as Mucci’s lyrics are scattered all over the place and don’t really tell a coherent story.

Feel It, on the other hand, is all about music. Switching the pace up even further, this ska track is the only feature of the album, inviting the powerful Queen Omega to the mic and the party people to the dancefloor: “When you step ina di dance, forget di bad vibes, make your body move from you glad you alive!”

With Inna Mi Brain, we get a well-deserved break from the speedy first part. In a laid-back rub-a-dub vibe, this ganja tune describes the joy of coming back home to the island of Jamaica, and the chorus even showcases Skarra’s ability to sing harmonies, a skill regrettably absent in most other tunes. Natty, the final track, is nothing for tender ears. Despite the relaxed, dubby atmosphere created by Manudigital, the singer spills explicit lyrics that circle back to the rudebwoy ragga image evoked by the album’s title.

Another pervasive theme of the oeuvre is the heartfelt homage paid to dancehall culture: sirens, lick shots and “run the track” or “this is a number one station” samples remind us of the authentic way to celebrate this music, and the cover brings that exact feel across as well. Two artists representing coolness galore, a golden cassette player and a mic – Ragga Blasta to your speakers! As if this wasn’t enough, more goodies are on your way: not only will this baby be available on vinyl, but its creators are currently on tour, too!
