Review: Million Stylez - Songs About You

More than three years after his album Everyday, Swedish dancehall king Million Stylez is back with an EP. Songs About You is the title of this six-track effort released by French label Special Delivery Music. While the riddims oscillate between mostly organic modern roots and a bit of tuneful, electro-infused dancehall, Million Stylez sings about love in all its stages.

Time Stops when he first sees her and starts to date her. He can‘t spend enough time with her. In Feeling For You, he expresses his growing feelings for her and asks Jah to show him what to do. He knows now that she could be the one. They‘re soon a perfect couple in Me & You. He misses her much when she‘s not around (Missing You). He‘s still impressed by her, and telling her that surely doesn‘t hurt at this stage of their relationship. Especially not on such a fresh dancehall riddim as in Every Little Thing. Despite this effort, it is just a matter of time until dark clouds gather on the horizon and he proclaims that he doesn‘t want to see her again (Neva Wanna See You Again). Fittingly, Million Stylez chooses an R‘n‘B-oriented track with melancholic piano accents. Think of dark, Henning-Mankell-like melancholy here.

Four different producers are involved in Songs About You, all of them hailing from France, the country Million Stylez‘ mother comes from. Bost & Bim of Jamaican Boy fame produced Time Stops, and TNT is responsible for Feeling For You (on the Long Time Riddim) and the previously released Me & You. Animal Sons‘ Clement did Missing You, his colleague Marc Neva Wanna See You Again. Special Delivery threw in Every Little Thing. Few other records in recent times have showcased such a variety of what French reggae producers are capable of.

Three and a half years without a proper album release are a long time in the reggae world. Songs About You eases the waiting for fans considerably, even though not all of the songs on it are new.
