Reggae icon Jimmy Cliff is dead! His family announced it today via social media:
"It's with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia. I am thankful for his family, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who have shared his journey with him. To all his fans around the world, please know that your support was his strength throughout his whole career. He really appreciated each and every fan for their love. I also wanted to thank Dr. Couceyro and the whole medical staff, as they have been extremely supportive and helpful during this difficult process. Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes. I hope you all can respect our privacy during these hard times. Further information will be provided at a later date.
See you and we see you Legend.

"I have lost a friend and Jamaica has lost one of its greatest sons. Rest in eternal peace, Jimmy. Your light, your music, and your spirit will live on forever."

"Absolutely heartbroken to hear about the passing of a Reggae forefather Jimmy Cliff.
A true foundation, a pillar of our music, and one of the first to carry reggae out into the world.
Jimmy wasn’t just a legend, he was a light.
From The Harder They Come to Many Rivers to Cross, he opened doors for all of us who came after. His courage, his spirit, his melody… they shaped the path we walk today.
Jimmy Cliff gave us Bob Marley Early in Bob’s career, Jimmy Cliff worked as a “tester” (A&R) for Leslie Kong’s Beverley’s Records. Cliff listened to new artists’ demos and selected what he thought was promising.
That’s exactly how Bob Marley got his first recording deal Bob auditioned, Cliff heard five of his songs, and he picked out three “Judge Not”, “One Cup of Coffee”, “Terror” to pitch to Kong
Those songs became some of Marley’s first official recordings
Every time I step on a stage, I’m reminded of the giants who laid the groundwork, and Jimmy was one of the greatest. A man of heart, humility, and unbelievable talent.
Rest easy, King.
Your voice lives forever and your legacy will keep inspiring generations of reggae lovers across the globe.
Big Love Ali"

"JIMMY CLIFF CROSSED MANY RIVERS: Omg Reggae fans and FB Family its not an easy road when you're overseas planning an event to help and assist victims of the devastation by the recent hurricane Melissa which literally destroyed western Jamaica.
Then you wake up and see lots of missed calls and messages that someone whom you worked with for many years in the music fraternity has left suddenly to join his ancestors in Zion.
I started working with Jamaican Reggae music Ambassador Jimmy Cliff in early 1980 as his tour & road manager, my first sojourn on tour with Jimmy Cliff was that historic tour of South Africa and from SA straight down to Brazil for a month long tour with Brazilian artist Gilberto Gil. The times spent working with Jimmy Cliffover the years were and still some of the most salient memories in Reggae Music for me. Will always remember that coheadlined tour I did with both Jimmy Cliff and Peter Tosh in 1982 against all odds as folks were saying it could never happened because of egos, which was proven wrong.
That tour went down as one of the best unification tour in Reggae's history back then despite some negative intervention. Jimmy Cliff was not just a Jamaican Reggae artist, he was an ambassador for Jamaica, I'm honored and privileged to have been associated with him and worked with him for so many years.
Condolences to his wife Latifa and his entire family. Sadly missed by the entire international music fraternity, may his Soul R.I.E.POWER"

Songs like Many Rivers to Cross and I Can See Clearly Now touched our hearts and lifted our spirits. I will always remember being out on tour together and the joy I felt watching you perform night after night. Love is energy and energy never dies!"
