BELOW, WE WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU HOW YOUR DONATIONS ARE CURRENTLY BEING USED IN RESPONSE TO THE HURRICANE:
St. Elizabeth is one of the regions most severely affected by Hurricane ‘Melissa’. Our goal is to offer children and young people in the area direct institutional support and meaningful educational day care. To make this possible as quickly and reliably as we can, we are supporting the reopening of the 'Great Start Academy' school.
In addition, with our support, the school will be hiring additional teachers, who will open the school on Saturdays to young people from the nearby communities who are not enrolled there. They will be offered free CXC preparation courses for their upcoming exams.
As the region currently lacks a reliable electricity supply, generators will be installed in the school building. These will not only allow regular school operations but will also give the local community a place to charge smartphones and power banks.
Our current efforts include a range of learning and support services: With the employment of additional therapeutic professionals, the school is able to provide pastoral care and initial psychological support. This helps children to cope with trauma and contributes to their emotional and mental stabilization. A daily lunch also ensures basic care - something that is not guaranteed in many places!
PLANT A SEED! – URBAN FARMING AS A SUSTAINABLE LEARNING PRINCIPLE!
A special focus is being placed on the “Plant A Seed” initiative. Melissa has almost completely destroyed the region's cultivated fields and crops.
The project therefore combines two essential learning goals: involving and supporting farmers, who will teach students fundamental techniques of food cultivation, while at the same time contributing to stabalizing the local food supply and actively engaging young people in addressing this challenge. In this way, Help Jamaica! not only improves the food situation in the short term but also creates participatory and forward-looking opportunities that strengthen future career prospects.
