A personal statement from Kim Sallaway, the artist.

"When I shoot a place, what I am really shooting is what it feels like to visit that place. Sort of a romantic reality.

I see things. I zero in on them… I'm looking for the magic that makes a good picture…Emotion.

I edit, examining, framing and re-framing. Timing is everything. I focus on the content and wait until the magic moment reveals itself. To the watchful eye, the everyday becomes transformed into the visual slices that are the memories that will last a lifetime; the photographs of the fisherman on the docks, the vending woman in the market and the children. They all become a visual testament to culture and art.

I create images with strong graphic content that will last across time. A good photograph must create in the viewer an emotional response. For almost 20 years I have not limited myself to any one type of subject matter. From the performing artists to the working mothers; from the flora and fauna and the architecture; to the arts that represent the cultures; from the athletes to the elders, my library of stock images is constantly growing and expanding.

In this changing world, the things and people around us become very transitional. Across the years I have created images that have withstood the test of time by recording slices of time on film. To capture the essence of a moment is to keep it available forever. This is what I do with my photographs.

By seeing the way we were, we can see the way we are.

I will be traveling again this winter to Indonesia, if world peace permits. I look forward to recording the incredible culture and lifestyles so diverse and different from our own here in North America."
