Review: Ziggy Marley @ Pacific Ampitheatre in Cost Mesa, CA 7/23/2010
Today was a special day. It was the birthday of Emperor Haile Selassie I, remembering that it has been 118 years since his birth. It created a special vibe in the air. The red, gold and green colors were well represented at the Orange County fair and it seemed no accident that rastaman, Ziggy Marley, was scheduled to perform at this large venue. With five Grammy’s to his credit, the eldest son of reggae legend, Bob Marley, and a veritable legend himself, was to take the stage in a few moments and the crowd was eager to cheer him on.
Performing with his usual band of excellent musicians from around the world Ziggy thrilled the crowd with a magnificent set. Opening with “This Train”, he prepared the audience for a ride “bound to glory”. The sold out ampitheatre was on its feet throughout his whole performance, dancing and singing along with him, his lyrics committed to their hearts. A familiar scent wafted through the air that enlivened all in attendance.
Ziggy’s performance was extremely energetic as I was concerned with his knee that was injured during a soccer match last summer. It appears that he has recovered well from surgery and rocked out and skanked better than I have seen in awhile. Ziggy really gave his all, taking off his guitar from time to time to facilitate his movements, his beautiful thigh-length dreadlocks swaying to the beat.
I was lucky enough to get a copy of the set list after the show, but Ziggy doesn’t keep to the list. He prefers to be spontaneous, moving songs around and adding additional songs to satisfy his audience with a mix from his vast repertoire from his days with the Melody Makers, his solo works and his Fathers favorites.
Cheered on to an encore, Ziggy returned to the stage saying “We Jammin’” and launched into his father’s classic tune. During the last song, “Look Who’s Dancing” he was joined onstage by teenage daughter, Zouri, and his brother, Stephen’s daughter, Shacia, who really knew how to whine up their waists. Ziggy danced over to them, much to their surprise. So ended a magnificent show of over an hour of giving ALL of his energy to the people. Ziggy, thanks for an immensely inspired performance and for all the love you send out to your audience!
