Julian Marley urges, “The devastation that has occurred in Haiti is unimaginable. We must rise to the occasion to help our brothers and sisters in every way possible.”

Those who cannot attend MIAMI FOR HAITI but are interested in helping can make donations online at www.carmafoundation.org and www.projectmedishare.org

Information and statement by Todd Michaels, organizer of the fundraiser:

[Check the details about the event here!]

As we all know, the devastation that has occurred in Haiti is beyond comprehension. I don’t think that there is any way to imagine how dire the situation actually is. Despite Haiti’s beauty and the beauty of its people, its recent history has been a history of torment and destitution. Finally things seemed to be slowly getting better, and we get this awful reminder of how fragile Haiti is. The destruction is on an unimaginable scale, and we need to help. This may be the biggest humanitarian crisis that any of us will see in our lifetimes, and early reports are saying that there may even be 500,000 lives lost.

As many of you know, Haiti has played a large role in my life. I am on the board of two organizations that work closely with Haiti, and was there this past March with my close friend, Melky Jean, the sister of Wyclef, and our foundation, Carma-Haiti. Many of you have contacted me asking how you can help. The powers that be are asking people not to come to the island, as the situation is too critical for that. The best thing that can be done is to give money and/or goods to large organizations that are established on the ground in Haiti. Here is one way that you can help.

This Friday, January 15, 2010, I am hosting a fundraiser to benefit the Haitian relief effort. Please see the attached flyer for details. The event will feature performances by Kymani and Julian Marley, as well as Melky Jean. Our co-hosts include An Easy Production, Carma Foundation, Love Over all Foundation, the Workshop, Julian Marley, Cedella Marley, Kymani Marley, Melky Jean, Marlon Hill, Cassandra Theramene, Jose Ortiz, Cathy Goodall, Corey Corciari, Ivette Naranjo, and myself. All proceeds and donations will be split between Project Medishare, which is sending doctors and supplies to Haiti, and the Carma Foundation which has boats bringing supplies to Haiti and teams on the ground. The venue and all artists have agreed to donate their proceeds to the foundations.

The event lasts from 7PM-midnight, and a minimum donation of $20 dollars is required (donation gets you a complimentary drink). Anything above that is appreciated and needed. You can donate beforehand online and print out a receipt, or donate at the door. Non-Perishable items such as blankets, clothes, etc. will also be collected. The location is Cafeina lounge located at 297 NW 23rd Street in the Miami Design District, at the corner of 23rd street and NW 2 Avenue.

If you are unable to attend, but still want to help, donations can be made online at www.carmafoundation.org or www.projectmedishare.org .

I would urge you please to attend, or at the very least, to donate online. The people of Haiti need all that we can give right now, plain and simple.
